The New Mayor Promises a 'New Era' for NYC in First Speech
During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.
A Historic Figure
The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.
“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.
Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.
The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.
A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:
- Free childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing Political Headwinds
The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.
The Basic Challenges of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
