Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
