The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
