The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
