Cyclone the storm is forecast to strengthen into a rare highest-level storm as it shifts toward the Caribbean island, bringing deadly rapid inundation and mudslides.

The cyclone, which had wind speeds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 6:00 AM GMT, is presently veering northwest in the Caribbean Sea and is projected to make landfall by midweek, as reported by meteorological authorities.

Alerts of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been issued as this storm produces up to 30 inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as thirteen feet above ground. "Take cover without delay," locals have been told.

The cyclone is the 13th named cyclone in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in the eleventh month.

Category Five Hurricane Risk

A highest-level cyclone is the most powerful category, with winds of at least 157mph.

Although Melissa is expected to weaken to a Category 4 hurricane before arriving at the island, experts said there was "minimal real distinction in the general consequences" upon landfall, and that the storm will be "just as powerful" when it hits the nation.

The country's head of government Andrew Holness stated: "I understand that there are many Jamaicans who are anxious, who are very concerned, and rightfully so: worry is natural.

"However the most effective method to manage worry and any nervousness and worry is to remain prepared."

Locals are being advised to protect their properties with sand barriers and plywood sheets, and to gather essentials.

Alerts are also active for areas in the neighboring country such as the primary urban center, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where this storm is projected to bring comparable impacts by the middle of next week.

Mudslides already being caused by the cyclone have caused two deaths in Haiti, according to emergency services.

Melissa is projected to cross the island nation by midweek before moving through the Caribbean archipelago and entering the Atlantic.
