Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
